Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are more common than you might realize. One in four women over age 15 has had at least one UTI, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If left untreated, a UTI can cause serious complications such as kidney damage or even death. But these conditions aren’t inevitable. The good news is that there are natural remedies you can try instead of taking antibiotics.
1. Cranberries
Cranberries have been shown to help treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to their anti-inflammatory properties. To make cranberry juice at home, simply add 1 cup of fresh cranberries to 2 cups of water and let them sit overnight. Strain out the cranberries and drink the mixture throughout the day. The juice should be stored in the refrigerator until ready to use. Once you start having UTI symptoms, drink 1/4 cup of cranberry juice three times a day while continuing with your regular diet and supplements to naturally cure your infection. Cranberries work best if they're allowed to sit for several days before drinking, making sure to strain them first.
2. Garlic
Garlic contains a powerful antibiotic called allicin. This substance helps kill off bacteria and viruses, especially those that may cause UTIs. Simply chop 4 to 6 cloves of garlic and put them into a glass bowl. Pour some boiling water over them, and then cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Let the clove soak in the hot water for 20 minutes, and then drain the clove and squeeze the garlic to remove any excess liquid. Add this to a blender, along with a pinch of salt and a little bit of olive oil to create a paste. Apply this mixture topically to the area around the infection. You should repeat this treatment two to four times per week until the infection is gone.
3. Chlorella
Chlorella is a green alga that's high in chlorophyll, which gives it its color. Chlorella is an excellent food supplement and natural remedy for urinary tract infections. Simply take 10 grams of chlorella twice daily. You can find this supplement in capsule form at many retailers.
4. Ginger
Ginger can be added to the diet to help prevent a UTI. The root of the ginger plant contains chemicals that help fight infection. If you don't want to purchase capsules, you can easily make your own tea by grating the root of half a small ginger. Put the grated root in a jar filled with boiling water, and allow it to steep for 15 minutes. Then strain out the ginger root and drink the tea. Make sure not to drink the ginger tea right away after steeping, since it loses potency. Drink the tea once or twice a day until the condition is cured.
5. Cucumber
If you're still experiencing pain after consuming cranberry and garlic, you might need something stronger. Cucumber contains a chemical called mucilage, which can help relieve inflammation and reduce the burning sensation associated with a UTI. Simply slice an unpeeled cucumber lengthwise, scrape out the seeds, cut the inside flesh of the cucumber into strips, and place them in a glass bowl. Cover the bowl with cheesecloth or a paper towel, and keep it in a dark location. Allow the cucumbers to steep for 24 hours, stirring them occasionally. Afterward, pour the cucumber water into a bottle, and store it in the refrigerator. Take about a teaspoon of cucumber water every hour for the rest of the day, and continue to do so until the UTI goes away.
6. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a common household item that contains substances that help heal cuts and burns. The gel inside aloe vera contains polysaccharides and enzymes that can stop bacterial infections. To use, apply a leaf directly to the affected area. You can also make a compress by adding aloe vera to a sink full of warm water and letting the mixture sit for 30 minutes. Soak a cloth in the liquid, wring it out, and then place it on the infected area. Leave it alone for as long as possible, and then rinse it off. Repeat this treatment two to five times per day until you notice improvement.
7. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains acetate, which kills bacteria and helps prevent UTI infections. Just mix 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar into 8 ounces of water, drink it down, and take another one or two times per day for two weeks.
